Permanent Residence/ILR

Indefinite Leave to Remain

It is a permission for permanent residency within the United Kingdom. Once you get indefinite leave to remain, you may be eligible to apply for British citizenship after a period of one year.

You become eligible for indefinite leave to remain after living in the UK for a specified period of time, depending on the type of visa you hold.

In case of marriage/spouse visa you may apply after 2 years and in case of work permit, or HSMP you may apply after 5 years of stay in U.K

You also need to have a good knowledge of the English language and pass the Life in the UK test to show that you have a knowledge and understanding of British culture.

If you do not have English skills at ESOL Entry 3 or above, you need to take an ESOL course to demonstrate your knowledge of language and life in the United Kingdom. You must take a course which includes citizenship materials. The course will allow you to gain sufficient knowledge of the United Kingdom at the same time as developing your knowledge of the English language.

Exemption from the above requirement: Persons aged above 65 or below 18 are exempted from this requirement. If you have a long-standing, permanent disability that prevents you from learning English you may not have to meet the requirements.
