You may come to the United Kingdom as a student if you have been accepted onto a course of study by an organisation that is on the register of education and training providers.
The course should be at one of the following:
- a publicly funded institution of further or higher education (a university) with maintained records of enrolment and attendance which are readily available to us;
- a genuine private education institution; or
- an independent fee-paying school;
and you need to be undertaking one of these:
- a recognised full-time degree course;
- a course run during the week that involves at least 15 hours of organised daytime study a week; or
- a full-time course of study at an independent fee paying school.
You must also:
- be registered with the United Kingdom awarding body if you are studying externally for a degree at a private education institution; and
- be able to pay for your course and support and accommodate yourself and any dependants without working or help from public funds.
- plan to leave the United Kingdom when you complete your studies. You need not to show visa officer that you plan to leave U.K at the end of your studies, if you are taking Bachelor Degree course or above.
(Note: after completing your Bachelor Degree or post graduate diploma/certificate you may apply to live in the U.K for two year as a ‘Post Study Worker’)

Can I Work?
Students may work part-time for a number of hours during term time depending on their course, and full time during vacations.
- Students following a course of degree level study or a foundation degree course can work for no more than 20 hours per week in term time;
- Students following a course of study below degree level study (excluding a foundation degree course) can work for no more than 10 hours per week in term time.
Is Same Day Service Available?
Yes! This service is available for the students who make Tier 4 applications. Home Office charges Higher Fees for same day service.
Point system/Eligibility
You need 40 points to apply under Tier 4 category.
- You are given 30 points for CAS (it is a unique reference number which has replaced visa letters. It should be issued by a Licensed sponsor)
- You are given 10 points for Maintenance (course fee + living expenses)
Switching from Student Visa
Switching from Tier 4 – General Students is only possible into one of the following categories.
- Tier 1 – All Highly Skilled Sub-Categories
- Tier 2 – Skilled Workers
- Tier 2 – Skilled Workers (Minister of Religion)
If you have completed Degree level course in the UK, then you might be eligible to apply under Tier 1-Post Study Work Visa. This is two year visa and you can do work in the UK without the need to have a work permit.
Bringing your Dependants with you
The students who will be studying in the UK for 6 months or less can not bring their dependants with them. Students who will be studying for longer than six months will be able to bring their dependants with them. You will have to show that you can support them without using public funds. They will be granted leave in line with your duration of leave.
Dependants will only be granted permission to work in the UK if the student will be following a foundation degree course, or a course at degree level
